About Kalavrita
kalavrita
Kalavrita, a beautiful and neatly arranged small town, is built at the foot of Chelmos mountain (alt. 750 m). Today it “unveils” itself to visitors not simply through its history but through its contemporary character as well.

The modern picture of Kalavrita is composed of the mountainous complexes surrounding it, the landscapes of natural beauty, the verdant vistas, its stone buildings, the track railway and the nearby destinations. The Track Railway constitutes one of the poles of attraction for visitors to the area since it maintains its original and rare technical infrastructure (open and vaulted tunnels carved into the rock, bridges, arches, train stations built in the traditional style, etc). A large part of the ride goes through the impressive Vouraikos gorge. It joins the seaside town of Diakopto with all essential equipment.

rail-stationThe first experience of visitors of Kalavrita is the historic railway station. At the end of the terminal, there is an old building housing the engine room.

A street beginning at the Railway Station leads visitors to the central square. Before reaching the central square, visitors encounter the Old Elementary School.

Some of the city’ s sights include the Administration Building, the Town Hall, the Kallimanopouleion Ecclesiastical Diaconic Center, the historic square of the Elders and the “Chelmos” hotel.

plateiaThe Mansion of Palaiologina, which is the most beautiful building in Kalavrita, it is believed that it was built by Thomas Palaiologos. In 1440 the mansion came in the hands of Thomas’ brother, Konstantinos. During Konstantinos’ rule, Kalavrita developed into a significant center of culture. During the same period, Konstantinos gifted the mansion to Aikaterini Palaiologos, daughter of a noble family from Chalandritsa and a relative of the imperial family. Its last owner, Mr. Vassileios Tsaparas, donated the building to the Municipality in order to be converted into a cultural center.

The Monastery of Mega Spilaio stands on a rugged vertical face of the mountain at a distance of 10 km northwest of Kalavrita. Tradition has it that the monastery was established in the second half of the 4th century. The sight of the eight-floor monastery as visitors approach is awe-inspiring.

chelmosTraveling two kilometers northeast of Kalavrita, on the way to the Ski Center, visitors encounter to their left, the Kalavrita Castle, which in local lore is associated with the Castle of Oria. The position of the castle is often associated by many with the Acropolis of ancient Kynaitha.

The Kalavrita ski center is located on the northwestern slope of Chelmos Mountain at an altitude ranging from 1.700 m at Kserokambos to 2.340 m at Neraidorachi and is well known as one of the most preferred winter destinations in Greece.
